David J. Whellan, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Jefferson Medical College. He is the Director of Clinical Trial Outcomes for the Department of Medicine and Director of Clinical Research for the Jefferson Heart Institute. He received his BS from the University of Pennsylvania, his Master of Health Sciences from Duke University, and MD degree from Washington University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in Clinical Cardiology at Duke University and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology.
Dr. Whellan is the Co-Principal Investigator of the HF-ACTION study, a $37 million National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute grant for research in heart failure and exercise training. He has lectured in various national venues on heart failure and is author or co-author of numerous peer-reviewed articles, reviews, abstracts, and book chapters. He is on the editorial board for American Heart Journal; and is a reviewer for Archives of Internal Medicine, Medical Care, and American Journal of Cardiology.
